Supreme Court upholds travel ban in major win for Trump

Shortly after supporting anti-LGBTQ discrimination, further muting voting rights, and making some terrible decisions about abortion clinics, the highest court in the US chose to uphold Donald Trump's travel Muslim ban, effectively siding with state-sanctioned islamophobia, according to NBC.

The meeting also comes amid the latest legal win for the Trump White House as the Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday to uphold the administration's travel ban in a 5-4 decision. The latest is the third iteration and places restrictions on travelers coming to the U.S. from Syria, Iran, Yemen, Somalia, Libya, North Korea, and Venezuela. After a review period, the administration determined Chad had satisfactorily improved its system, and removed it from the list.

Lower courts had deemed the ban unconstitutional, but the United States top court reversed the decision in a 5-4 ruling.

Trump said the ruling follows 'months of hysterical commentary from the media and Democratic politicians who refuse to do what it takes to secure our border and our country'.

Tuesday's court decision means the ban will remain in effect.

Mr Roberts rejected the challenger's claim of anti-Muslim bias, but was careful not to endorse any of Mr Trump's provocative statements.

"The Supreme Court has upheld the clear authority of the President to defend the national security of the United States", Trump said. The initial order, signed one week after he took office in January a year ago, led to days of nationwide protests and chaos at airports across the country.

Justice Sonia Sotomayor, writing the dissent, said they show that the travel ban was motivated by animosity toward a disfavored group.

Trump's tweet contradicted what then-Press Secretary Sean Spicer told reporters in January 2016 when he insisted Trump's executive order is "not a travel ban."

"America is not flawless, we understand that, we don't pretend otherwise, but this is a step backwards", said Moh Kilani.

Coons says Trump's travel ban "is not only discriminatory and counterproductive, it stands in direct contrast to the principles embedded in our Constitution and our founders' vision of a nation where all people are free to worship as they choose". In addition, the ban also covered North Korea and Venezuela.

Mubarak with CAIR told Spectrum News many Muslims feel hopeless about the ban and are anxious more countries could be added.
