Partisan Divide Deepens Over Trump’s Supreme Court Pick

President Trump nominates Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court during an event in the East Room of the White House in Washington

The Kavanaugh nomination "has put reproductive rights and freedoms and health care protections for millions of Americans on the judicial chopping block", said Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., who is scheduled to lead an abortion rights rally Tuesday in front of the Supreme Court building. But this committee, and the American public more broadly, should be aware of the important work Judge Kavanaugh has done to remedy those disparities. "The stakes are high for the LGBT community". He called Kavanaugh "one of the finest and sharpest legal minds of our time". Of the 28 percent would like to see the ruling reversed, 51 percent were Republicans and 13 percent were Democrats. One feminist group is also demanding an investigation into whether Judge Kavanaugh knew anything about sexual harassment claims against another federal judge for whom he clerked in 1991.

Anthony Kennedy joined the Supreme Court in 1988.

While Supreme Court nominations are the job of the Senate, House members are also weighing in.

However, Kavanaugh appears to have passed her litmus test on the issue.

Democrats have turned their attention to pressuring two Republicans, Sens. Joe Donnelly of Indiana, Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Doug Jones of Alabama, Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Dianne Feinstein of California.

Trump polls highly among voters in those states, and the closely watched Democratic trio will be under tremendous pressure to back the president.

All three released statements that focused on their willingness to fully vet the nominee. "I will take the same approach as I have previously for a Supreme Court vacancy". She voted in April 2017 to appoint Justice Neil Gorsuch, Trump's Supreme Court nominee who replaced the late Justice Antonin Scalia.

Nearly two-thirds of Americans believe that the landmark Roe v. Wade ruling should stand, according to a Gallup poll.

He will be accompanied by former Sen. Kyl may also be asked to sit in on the meetings or help guide the conversations behind closed doors.

The documents do not provide a complete record of Kavanaugh's finances.

In 2016, Kavanaugh ruled in favor of a division of Verizon, which had ordered employees to stop displaying pro-union signs.

Kavanaugh, 53, a 12-year veteran of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals, is expected to face a bruising confirmation battle. And so that's really what I think any good president ought to be looking for in a judge.

At the same time, Republicans are urging a half dozen Democratic senators, largely those who are up for re-election in Trump-won states, to back the president's choice.
