Apple Music might have overtaken Spotify and have more paying US subscribers

Major music distributor says Apple Music now has more US paying subscribers than Spotify

Apple Music's total subscriber numbers still can't quite compete with Spotify's global user base, but it seems it has a fighting chance in the USA market. Today, five months later, it has reportedly come to pass.

The news comes via Digital Music News from a confidential source who shared a report with subscriber numbers for streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and more. However, considering the company filed to go public in the United States in April, reports that its primary competition there has made up what was once a massive lead won't be welcome news, especially to investors.

Apple Music and Spotify can now both claim "20 million plus" subscribers in the United States, putting them essentially in a tie. This overtaking doesn't appear to be surprising - numerous reports over the past few months have noted Apple Music's accelerated growth in favor of Spotify, which logically lead to Cupertino dethroning the older streaming service. The data also suggested Apple was getting stronger user engagement and banking more money per subscription due to its more limited discount options.

Globally, Spotify remains well ahead, with around 70M paying subscribers against Apple Music's 45M.

A year ago, Spotify boasted 17 million USA subscribers, compared to 13 million for Apple music. Apple Music, however, is "a hair ahead", which is not a surprise. The Wall Street Journal in February noted that Apple Music was already "on the verge" of surpassing Spotify. Spotify claimed 75 million paying customers at the end of March, whereas Apple claimed 50 million, a number that is skewed upward because many of those were on free trials.
