Democrats, activists rally against Trump's family separation policy

Kirstjen Nielsen

In an unusual statement issued through her spokesperson, Mrs Trump, who is an immigrant herself, said she "hates to see children separated from their families and hopes both sides of the aisle can finally come together to achieve successful immigration reform". She said those seeking asylum "have no reason to break the law and illegally cross between ports of entry".

Sec. Nielsen tweeted Sunday that the Trump Administration "do [es] not have a policy of separating families at the border".

Hillary Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, spoke out Monday against President Donald Trump's "zero-tolerance" immigration policy and its defenders.

President Donald Trump's eldest son, Donald Trump Jr., liked a tweet that suggested that children who had been separated from their parents at the US southern border had been "coached" by liberals, comparing them to crisis actors.

Sen. Susan Collins, a moderate Republican from ME, said the policy is "inconsistent with our American values", adding that "we need to fix our immigration laws, but using children is not the answer".

Donald Trump Jr. (left) liked a recent tweet suggesting that the children separated from their parents at the US southern border had been "coached" by liberals. "Every parent who has ever held a child in their arms, every human being with a sense of compassion and decency, should be outraged".

"What the administration has chose to do is to separate children from their parents to try to send a message that if you cross the border with children, your children are going to be ripped away from you", Senator Susan Collins told CBS television's "Face the Nation" news program.

Her criticism of the protocol of separating immigrant kids from their parents should they cross the border illegally also came in the wake of the leader's recent remarks that the Democrats were to blame for the policy being introduced. "We want safety and security for our country. and it starts with the border". "Well, we have an orchestra here. What's missing is a conductor", he says in the clip. "Instead of criticizing those of us who uphold our oaths by enforcing the laws Congress drafted, work with us to change them".

France urges 'cynical' Italy to rethink stance on migrant ship
Spain has offered to take in a rescue ship carrying more than 600 migrants after Italy and Malta refused . The official, who asked not to be identified, said that Italy would not open its ports to the Aquarius .

Richard Tofel, ProPublica's president, said the decision to post the recording and accompanying story reflected a focus on providing a fuller accounting of what's happening in facilities that are closed to public view.

But Democrats and some Republicans have criticized the administration for dividing almost 2,000 children from their parents between mid-April and the end of May.

After Mr Trump ordered tougher action, Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced a "zero-tolerance" policy on 7 May. "I would cite you to the Apostle Paul and his clear and wise command in Romans 13, to obey the laws of the government because God has ordained them for the goal of order", he said Thursday.

Mr Trump plans to meet with House Republicans on Tuesday to discuss pending immigration legislation amid an election-season debate over an issue that helped vault the NY real estate mogul into the Oval Office in 2016.

"We have a statutory responsibility that we take seriously to protect alien children", she said. "I think we've made it abundantly clear that the daylight exists between Democrats and Congress and their ability to change this law", she said.

Furthermore, the rise of facilities that house children separated from their families at the border during Trump's administration has been well documented.

She also said that Congress can fix these problems.
