The entire world was riveted by television images of President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un shaking hands in front of a backdrop of North Korean and USA flags, walking to and from lunch, checking out Trump's limousine and finally signing a summit declaration.

Asked about the issue after the meeting, President Trump said he'd been lobbied about the issue even as a presidential candidate. Kim didn't confirm and extend a moratorium on testing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles; he didn't say he'd detail his arsenals or open them to inspection. "There were obstacles but we overcame them to be here".

But there are still many questions about what comes next. The drills help keep USA forces at a state of readiness in one of the world's most tense flashpoints. But we'll be saving a tremendous amount of money. Trump grasped Kim's right arm as they shook, and then, later, took ahold of Kim's left arm as they turned to face the cameras and the world, both their expressions momentarily deadening before they turned to face each other again, and smiled.

"We'll probably need another summit", he said.

US President Donald Trump (R) waves as he and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un look on from a veranda during their historic US-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018. The joint statement Trump and Kim signed gave few details on how the two countries will move forward with denuclearization of the peninsula.

Between handshakes, a White House invitation, and even an impromptu tour of "The Beast", the famed US presidential limousine known for its high-tech fortifications, Trump sought to build a personal connection with Kim and said they have a "very good" relationship.

The president appeared to reference North Korea destroying parts of its Punggye-ri nuclear test site as evidence that the country is serious about denuclearization.

On nuclear weapons, Mr Kim "reaffirmed his firm and unwavering commitment to complete denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula". The final communique between the two leaders was a toothless, empty document that committed North Korea to nothing and brought the world no closer to reining in Pyongyang's nuclear ambitions.

"This summit was a crucial and necessary step to build upon the positive developments achieved in inter-Korean relations and on the peninsula so far", the EU's diplomatic chief Federica Mogherini said in a statement.

"Obviously we support the continuing efforts by the president on North Korea".

Trump said during an interview outside the White House Friday that Kim's power should not be underestimated.

Trump had said earlier in Singapore that Otto Warmbier was a "very special person" and that his death had galvanized the administration's determination to deal with North Korea.

Trump was smiling when he said it, but he wasn't joking. "Anybody that takes over a situation like he did at 26 years of age and is able to run it and run it tough".

Warmbier, said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio, is "a constant reminder to me about the evil nature of this regime". I can commit "to work towards" beating Roger Federer at Wimbledon, but that doesn't mean that I will ever reach the goal. This is going to be a very complicated process once you start getting into matters of timing, a kind of sequencing.
