Trump calls Trudeau ’indignant’ ahead of G7 summit

Trump's friendly fire has ramped up tensions in anticipation of the summit, promising a showdown when the President comes face to face with a group of world leaders he has repeatedly offended.

In one of today's postings, Trump says he is heading to Canada for G7 talks that will mostly centre on the longtime, unfair trade practices aimed at the United States.

The Manoir Richelieu is the site of the G7 leaders summit in La Malbaie, Quebec. French President Emmanuel Macron warned Trump the G7 could form a group without the U.S. and that "no leader was forever". Trump's claim that US national security was at stake-that, say, luxury German autos were going to destroy America-was understandably viewed as risible by nations which had backed Washington in war.

"Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the U.S. massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers", he tweeted. "Ongoing negotiations are a good sign and are certainly better than a tariff war".

Thursday, Trump took aim at Trudeau and Macron, accusing them of benefiting from one-sided trade arrangements with the United States.

In talks in Beijing over the weekend, China offered to buy close to $70 billion in USA agriculture, energy and manufacturing products over a year as part of a package meant to ward off US tariffs, according to a person briefed on the talks with the White House.

"We have massive trade deficits with nearly every country".

"Looking forward to straightening out unfair Trade Deals with the G7 countries", Trump tweeted.

"I know we're going to have some very, very frank conversations quite clearly around the table", Trudeau told Global TV in an interview, adding he would convey Canada's displeasure over the metal tariffs personally when he met Trump in Quebec.

Memorial Day weekend travel times to avoid
Smith said the high prices are causing him and others to stay home this holiday weekend. "The price won't stop us from traveling". While just across the bridge, the Upper Peninsula has some of the lowest gas prices in the state.

Pleas by the G7 member countries for exemptions from the United States steel and aluminum tariffs, which went into effect on June 1, have fallen on deaf ears in Washington.

In a bid to rebuild America's industry, Trump has imposed hefty tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, including those from key G7 allies like Canada, Japan and the European Union. In addition, China would buy more USA crude oil and natural gas exports to quench its thirst for energy.

Expectations for a resolution of the trade row this week are low after finance leaders from the United States' G7 partners butted heads with U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin at a meeting last week in the Canadian resort town of Whistler, British Columbia.

Most recently, Trump pulled the US out of the Iran nuclear agreement, following his earlier decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord. European allies have urged Trump to reconsider. Representatives of the European Union will also be in attendance over the weekend.

Trudeau has said the Quebec summit offers the G7 leaders an opportunity to find solutions to their many differences.

American allies are fuming over new tariffs on steel and aluminum imported into the USA, and over the president saying those tariffs will strengthen national security.

The two leaders also dismissed as absurd Trump's assertion of national security concerns.

And at the same time, the USA president seems more at home with autocrats than with Washington's traditional allies.
