One sheriff's deputy is dead and another is in critical condition after they were shot Friday during a prisoner transport in Kansas City, Kansas, authorities said. She said during a news conference that it was "very possible" the deputies were shot "with their own firearm" as they were transporting detainees in a gated area behind the courthouse.
Deputy Patrick Rohrer, 35, was taken to a hospital where he later died, the Kansas City police said.
Major Kelli Bailiff, with the Wyandotte County Sheriff's Office, said the deputies were overcome and possibly shot with their own service weapon.
Another Wyandotte County deputy who was shot is in critical condition at the University of Kansas Hospital, according to officials. Police Officer Zac Blair told the newswire that no other suspects were being sought. The male deputy who was killed was not identified.
The shooting occurred outside the courthouse annex, near the area where inmates are transported.

2nd Kansas sheriff's deputy dies after shooting
Police Chief Terry Zeigler said on Twitter that the department is working a major incident but provided no further details. Bailiff said the inmate was being taken across the street from the jail, to the services building, for a court hearing.
The suspect is in the operating room at the same hospital, Zeigler said. He'd been with the sheriff's office for seven years. The surviving deputy is female.
"Today's awful events in Kansas City bitterly remind us once again of the dangers and sacrifices faced every day by law enforcement officers throughout our state and nation", Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.
The Kansas City Star reports that the shooting happened shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday in the middle of Barney Allis Plaza. She said she'd gladly give up a third trial for her daughter's murder if he could be convicted in the latest one.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said that people will now be seeing them wearing mourning bands as a sign of "respect, honor and solidarity".
Few details have been released about the shootings, including the victims' names. In the other incident, a standoff ended when a sword-wielding woman who fled from police later was shot after attempts to negotiate peacefully proved unsuccessful.
