England confident ahead of World Cup opener against Tunisia

Delph:

The last tournament in Brazil four years ago saw England start with a 2-1 defeat to Italy, Daniel Sturridge's equaliser proving in vain as Mario Balotelli scored Italy's victor, while in 2010 England drew 1-1 with the United States after goalkeeper Rob Green's costly error.

It was a slightly surprising opening gambit from Delph and one that naturally led to follow-up questions. We're a team, it's all about the team and everybody digs in, sticks together and the manager chooses the best team to face the opponent. "So to get the chance to test ourselves against nations from different continents is something we're looking forward to".

Talking to England's YouTube channel Southgate said: "The players know the team, so I think that's helpful that everything's settled, they know their jobs, and the guys that aren't in the team know their jobs, and have prepared well. They're clear on how we want to play, they're clear on the opposition".

"I likened them to Manchester City in terms of how they like to try and play football and move the ball around fast".

Rose was not regular in the Tottenham squad and is competing with Ashley Young for a spot in the starting XI.

"I'd love to see Boston build our first open-air stadium since Fenway Park", Walsh said.

"Really?" he exclaimed with a smile when asked about that team. "I'm still the same person and team-mate, but I've been scoring a few more goals in training, perhaps", he said. I live in the present, take each day as it comes. "I think, with H, he's always been a captain - whether he had the armband or not".

"Sometimes that is not the outcome but, on the day, as long as you are a team and you work hard, embrace the moment, play free and enjoy the football..."

Delph did not give away whether he got the nod but is ready to forego a starting role this summer in order to be by wife Natalie's side.

"A little bit (difficult being out here)", Delph said.

"Obviously there've been talks between me and the gaffer". "That's obviously not ideal, but it's part of life".

"No, nothing changes", Delph said of the striker.

"I wasn't aware. He's my best mate, I've known him since we were 10 and we're very close", he added.

"Watching the game [Russia v Saudi Arabia] the other night it was great for the tournament to get started and get going but we just have itchy feet now waiting for our game on Monday night", he told Sky Sports News.
