His statement follows a report from the New York Times, which criticized the White House for lacking a scientific advisory team.

US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jung Un after their summit meeting in Singapore on Tuesday pledged to re-start bilateral relations and to pursue the demilitarization and denuclearization of the entire Korean peninsula working together to achieve peace.

One of the major steps sealed in the four-point document is "complete denuclearization of the Korean peninsula".

In meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Trump once again displayed his affiinty for dictators and the hollowness of his self-legendary negotiating skills.

Members of the Iranian government were hardly the only ones citing the US president's decision to abandon the landmark nuclear accord in assessing whether Trump will stay committed to gritty diplomatic discussions when the photo-ops end.

Trump seemingly downplayed the significance of the exercises during a news conference following his summit in Singapore with the North Korean leader, in which Kim broadly agreed to end his nuclear weapons programme without providing specifics on how he would do so. "North Korea or South-North summit could take place when two former South Korea presidents are still behind bars", he added, showing support for former presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung bak. The president said the drills cost the USA a "tremendous amount of money", and that South Korea hasn't always chipped in enough.

If Mattis was aware that Trump was going to announce a suspension of military exercises, he apparently did not share that information with the South Koreans or with the military organisation most directly affected: US Forces Korea.

A U.S. Forces Korea spokeswoman said the command had received no updated guidance on the issue, including about the upcoming Ulchi Freedom Guardian exercise that is due to begin in August.

During the press conference, Trump also said that North Korean leader Kim is destroying a key missile engine testing site, without specifying its location. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa. "We have done these exercises for years with the South Koreans and so I would just ask the president, why do we need to suspend them?" Several of those hours were spent discussing the details of the joint "comprehensive" agreement with Kim.

Other commitments also didn't make it into the text, he said, including his own plan to halt "war games" with South Korea.

Ingraham, who has often chastised the left and mainstream media for its coverage of Trump, invoked recent comments by HBO host Bill Maher and his hope for an economic recession if it meant getting rid of the Republican commander in chief.
