Another former first lady, Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, on Monday called the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" policy that has separated children from their parents at the southern USA border "a moral and humanitarian crisis".

"Separating families is not mandated by law at all", Clinton said.

Trump also claimed that crime "in Germany is way up".

He has consistently blamed Democrats for the impasse, even though his fellow Republicans control both chambers in Congress. Democrats have accused the president of using children as hostages in the political dispute over immigration. Border Patrol agents take into custody a father and son from Honduras near the U.S. -Mexico border on June 12, 2018 near Mission, Texas.

"The United States will not be a migrant camp or a refugee holding camp", he said.

President Donald Trump emphatically defended his administration's policy Monday, again falsely blaming Democrats.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen delivered an unyielding performance in the White House briefing room on Monday, defending the family separation policy and calling on lawmakers to overturn the policy with a sweeping immigration overhaul.

Clinton, former first lady, secretary of state and Democratic presidential nominee, said at an awards lunch for the Women's Forum of NY that the separations are not required by law and are not grounded in any religion. Her spokeswoman says that Mrs. Trump believes "we need to be a country that follows all laws", but also one "that governs with heart". Michelle Obama had seemingly struck up a strange-bedfellows' friendship with the Bushes at a variety of events that brought presidents and wives together.

People have been detained and referred for criminal prosecution, but U.S. rules state that children are not allowed to be held with their parents because they have not been charged with a crime. He said the number of immigrants crossing with children increased sharply during the Obama administration.

The administration has decided "to separate children from their parents to try to send a message that if you cross the border with children, your children are going to be ripped away from you", Senator Susan Collins told CBS television's "Face the Nation".

He will meet with Republican colleagues on Tuesday to discuss both bills, which the White House has said he would be willing to sign. She said the government has high standards for detention centers and the children are well cared for, stressing that Congress needs to plug loopholes in the law so families can stay together. "It is immoral. And it breaks my heart", Bush wrote.

Democratic Congressman Peter Welch has criticised the conditions in which children are being housed. What the administration argues is that when an adult is prosecuted, they go into federal custody.

"What the administration has chose to do is to separate children from their parents to try to send a message that if you cross the border with children, your children are going to be ripped away from you", she said.

Over the weekend, protesters rallied against the Trump administration's "zero tolerance" immigration crackdown, accusing White House and U.S. immigration officials of cruelty. Yet, he says it's up to the Democrats to fix it.

While current first lady Melania Trump's statement largely echoed her husband's decrying the practice, the first ladies all called for it to end.
