Gunmen armed with assault rifles and grenade launchers stormed the heavily fortified headquarters of the Afghan interior ministry on Wednesday, battling security forces for more than two hours in the latest attack on the capital Kabul.

At least one bomb went off at the first checkpoint of the ministry's compound before attackers exchanged gunfire with security forces, according to officials. The statement called it an "immersion attack" on the ministry in Kabul.

Twelve other people, including four police officers and eight civilians, were wounded in the attack, provincial police chief Mohmmad Abdali told RFE/RL. In a later tweet, he said there were concerns that an attacker in a USA military uniform was on the base and that head counts were underway.

"The - the senior Taliban leader who was there was the deputy shadow governor of Helmand, and a number of other leaders underneath him", Gen. Nicholson said in response a question. The group views the Afghan government as weak, divided and unable to make decisions on big issues, including the full withdrawal of US/Nato forces, releasing their prisoners and the removal of Taliban officials' names from sanctions lists.

He said the attackers set off a suicide auto bomb at the entrance to the station before three suicide bombers tried to enter.

The militants traded fire with security force before they were killed within minutes. He said both bombers were identified, shot and killed by forces.

There were also serious incidents in Takhar province in the north, in Loghar, east of the capital, and Kandahar in the south, keeping up a pattern of attacks across the country.

During the period of violence, the Afghan National Defense and security forces defeated more than 80 percent of the enemy attacks on district centers, meaning the Taliban failed to achieve their target goals, the general noted.

And in northern Samangan province, a provincial hospital director was killed when a sticky bomb attached to his auto detonated on Tuesday in the provincial capital, Aybak, according to Sediq Azizi, the provincial spokesman.

ISIS also claimed responsibility for a series of attacks in April that killed 31 people across the Afghan capital, including 10 journalists. It is unclear who carried out the attack, though the southern province is the Taliban's historic heartland.

An Afghan official says at least two police officials were killed in suicide-bomb attacks at a police station in eastern Logar province. He said the victims included mechanics who had been contracted to fix Afghan army vehicles. The attackers did not manage to enter the main compound.
