Beaches in Florida were largely empty ahead of Memorial Day as a slowly intensifying storm carrying brisk winds and heavy rain approached the U.S. Gulf Coast on Sunday.

Heavy downpours are expected to begin lashing parts of those states on Sunday. A high surf warning was in effect through 7 p.m. Tuesday local time.

Although the center of Alberto is expected to pass to the West of the Suncoast we may experience low end tropical storm force winds beginning on Sunday morning.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 miles per hour (85 km/h) with higher gusts. Deep, tropical moisture from Alberto will stream in later this afternoon and evening and increase rain chances.

The National Weather Service has issued flash flood advisories across the region.

Alberto approaching Cuba as it begins to make turn north
Gov. Rick Scott declares state of emergency across Florida over fears of subtropical storm Alberto

According to the latest track by the National Hurricane Center Alberto will move to the north just off the west coast of Florida on Sunday towards the coast of Alabama where it will then stall out a little or really slow down its forward motion. A gradual strengthening was expected as the storm moves north.

More showers and possibly another thunderstorm in the afternoon are possible on Monday, Memorial Day. Heavy rainfall, flooding and tropical winds.

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday as the storm threatened up to 12 inches of rain over the Memorial Day weekend and tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Regardless of where it makes landfall the same threats remain. Isolated parts of the Gulf Coast could receive up to a foot of rain.

The Florida Panhandle into eastern Alabama and western Georgia are forecast to see four to eight inches of rain Sunday, with isolated storm totals of 12 inches.

Heavy rains are still a possibility, with 3 to 5 inches possible over widespread areas and as much as 8 inches in spots.

In Southern Alabama, Mississippi and the western Florida panhandle there could be as much as one foot of rainfall. A subtropical storm has a less defined and cooler center than a tropical storm, and its strongest winds are found farther from its center. As it travels up the warm waters of the Gulf, it could well become a full tropical storm. These rains could produce life-threatening flash floods and mudslides.
