Local elections: Theresa May not 'an electoral failure', says pollster

Emma Dent Coad later put her head on the table as she heard that her party had failed to make any significant gains in the target borough

Theresa May shrugged off a hard week as Prime Minister as she hailed Conservative "success" in English local elections after Jeremy Corbyn's Labour failed to make predicted breakthroughs. This time last week, the Conservatives were [1.9] to win most seats next time Britain goes to the polls.

In the last of the 150 results declared, Labour's sweep of 42 of the 45 seats in Tower Hamlets also represented a serious defeat for Aspire, the party backed by disgraced former mayor Lutfur Rahman, which won no seats. The Conservatives have endured a turbulent year while Labour should have been performing better at this stage of the electoral cycle. "They are right", he told the Daily Mail.

As a effect of the anti-Semitism scandal which has mired the Labour Party in controversy, the Conservatives managed to maintain seats and majorities in a number of London boroughs they were expected to lose.

Rawlings vowed to tackle anti-Semitism and remove it from his party.

The council said it was told Carroll had rejoined the party at lunchtime.

"As late as yesterday, Conservatives were telling me there was no way they would let her back in, irrespective of what happened, and yet the MP and the leader of the Conservatives have this morning welcomed her back into the fold".

He added that huge swathes of the country can not accept this Labour party in power. Other people just shut the door in our faces'.

"So what I would say back to Ken Livingstone and others who have made this argument that it's all a smear created to just undermine Jeremy Corbyn, let's hope that these elections draw a very firm line under these arguments and basically knock it out, because the truth of the matter is there is a very real sense of rawness in the Jewish community". Corbyn in 2009 called Hezbollah operatives his "friends" and Hamas an organization "dedicated towards the good of the Palestinian people and bringing about peace and social justice".

That didn't come to pass and Labour MPs, unhappy with Corbyn, are citing the anti-Semitism row which has engulfed the party recently and his unusual response to the poisoning of Sergei Skripal in Salisbury. This was one of their top targets and they threw everything at it, but they failed.

The street protests were unprecedented and highlighted a deep crisis in relations between representatives of British Jewry and the party that used to be many of their constituents' political home.

The opposition has grown from seven seats to nine, with Labour occupying five, Liberal Democrats remaining with two, and UKIP down to one seat alongside a single Independent. And Labour did technically win the night, by winning the most council seats. UKIP was down 92.

However the shift in the Labour Party towards the far left appears to have fractured support in Cornwall, evident from the way that long term members such as Mr Dwelly have left.

Voters in England cast their ballots on Thursday in local government elections expected to show rising support for Prime Minister Theresa May's opponents in London and add to questions about her ability to follow through on her Brexit plan.

Triumphant Tories have regained control of Pendle Borough Council - but in controversial fashion.

Ukip suffered a bloodbath, with dozens of councillors culled and its own general secretary comparing the party to the Black Death.

"Think of the Black Death in the Middle Ages".

"I am disappointed we lost the council but we're not going away".

"Our time isn't finished because Brexit is being betrayed".
