A knife-wielding assailant killed one person and injured four others in a lively neighborhood near Paris' famed Opera Garnier before he was killed by police in the French capital Saturday night. The prosecutor's office on counterterrorism has launched an investigation into the incident.

"Once back inside we heard sirens and 2 gun shots".

Another witness told BFMTV she was eating with friends in a restaurant when she saw somebody passing by shouting for help, pursued by another person.

France "will not yield an inch to the enemies of freedom", President Emmanuel Macron said shortly after the attack, praising police officers for "neutralizing the terrorist". The attacker killed a 29-year-old man and wounded four others before being shot by police. When officers arrived minutes later, he threatened them and was shot dead, according to police union official Yvan Assioma.

Many described scenes of panic as Parisians realised a potential terror attack was underway in a city that has been hit by multiple deadly jihadist assaults in recent years.

IS claimed that one of its "soldiers" carried out the attack, according to the SITE monitoring group.

The French interior minister is holding a special security meeting Sunday to address the attack, which was claimed by the Islamic State group. The IS claimed responsibility via its Amaq news agency, but provided no proof for its claim. "All my thoughts are with the victims and the wounded from the knife attack perpetrated in Paris tonight, as well as their loved ones".
