Mike Pompeo Threatens to Impose the 'Strongest Sanctions in History' on Iran

In his speech "After the Deal: A New Iran Strategy" at the Heritage Foundation in Washington, Pompeo pledged that the U.S. would apply unprecedented financial pressure on Tehran via sanctions.

Zarif wrote: "It repeats the same wrong choices and will thus reap the same ill rewards". Kowsari said, referring to Pompeo's demand that Iran end its proliferation of ballistic missiles and halt further launching or development of nuclear-capable missile systems.

Iran's Foreign Ministry has called the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's threatening remarks of crushing Iran "absurd and interventionist". "It's completely unrealistic and a total pipe dream; he's asking for unilateral surrender by the Islamic Republic of Iran", said Barbara Slavin, Iran expert at the Atlantic Council, reported the Financial Times.

It would not be an exaggeration to say that to meet U.S. demands, Iran would have to transform itself into another country altogether and acknowledge a secondary status in the Middle East hierarchy. "These will be the strongest sanctions in history by the time we are complete".

Pompeo had on Monday issued a severe warning to Iran, saying Washington would be ready to impose the "strongest sanctions in history" if it does not alter its regional policies. "We can nullify USA sanctions, using methods such as eliminating the dollar and replacing it with national currencies in transactions between two or more parties; thus, isolate the Americans", the supreme leader said.

Under the deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the US and other world powers offered sanctions relief in exchange for Iran giving up its nuclear capability.

The US is trying to undermine Iran's economy by offering this illusion that the recent plunge in the Iranian currency's value in the free market could cripple the country's economy, the former official said.

An escalation of Iranian belligerence will undercut Saudi Arabia's security, because Yemen is likely to be the first area where Iran will flex its military muscles.

The NCRI's main constituent group, the People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) is widely credited with the on-the-ground organization of the continuing protests, a key element in their potential to bring about real change.

In early May President Donald Trump announced the U.S. withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, in a move that sparked a cold snap in Washington's ties with its European allies and co-signatories to the deal, including the European Union, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Iran, Russia, and China. The company has sought a waiver from the Trump administration, but after Pompeo's speech, it seems unlikely.

Others anxious that Pompeo was forcing Iran into a corner, one likely to raise tensions in the region. He insisted Iran give nuclear inspectors unfettered access to the country and stop funding rebels in Yemen.

He also believes that Washington's decision to quit the Iranian nuclear deal was due to the current U.S. administration's utter incompetence and misunderstanding of the deal.

Separately, Iran's government spokesman said that the plan outlined by Pompeo would exacerbate the public's hostility to the United States.

Pompeo is defending President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 deal during a speech Monday at the conservative Heritage Foundation.

Laying out Trump's new approach Monday, Pompeo said he couldn't put a timeline on how long the strategy might take.

In his speech, Pompeo argued that Iran had advanced its march across the Middle East precisely because of the nuclear deal, which saw the West lifting sanctions on Tehran in return for Iran limiting its nuclear program.

State Department officials say the aim of the speech is to outline a path forward after Trump announced he would withdraw the USA from the 2015 landmark nuclear deal with Iran and reimpose sanctions, a decision that immediately puts the United States in breach of its commitments.
