Flags set to honor veterans

The Fort Smith National Cemetery placed their flags on the graves on Thursday, with veterans groups volunteering for the task.

American Legion parade: Starting at 8:30 a.m. Monday, a parade honoring Memorial Day will follow a route from Minnesota 95 and Central Avenue to 7th Avenue, 5th Street, and 5th Avenue ending at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Although they didn't reach that goal, members were pleased with their efforts.

"We're putting out flags to say thank you to the people who died for our county", said Girl Scout Chloe Pierce.

Memorial Day is now just days away, however local veteran support chapters of the VFW and Military Order of the Purple Heart have been keeping busy organizing Memorial Day events throughout the entire week leading up to Monday. "It's a good time to teach the youth of today to appreciate the freedom that they have and for those people who gave it to us".
