Detainee Uprising Outside Jakarta Is Claimed by Islamic State
The jail in the Mobile Police Brigade (Brimob) headquarters in Depok houses high-risk terrorism convicts as well as Jakarta's former Governor Basuki Tjahaja Purnama also known as Ahok, Efe news reported.
At least five counter-terrorism police have been killed and one is being held hostage by Islamist militants in clashes at a jail outside Jakarta, Indonesia.
In an interview with MetroTV station, police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said the inmates who provoked the riot were members of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, a network of Indonesian extremist groups formed in 2015 that pledges allegiance to Islamic State group leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
Iqbal denied that Islamic State was involved.
The clash was triggered by the objection of the inmates to the prison's authorities making checks on food being brought to them, the spokesman said.
The Islamic State group's Amaq News Agency said its fighters took part in the riot late on Tuesday.
