The source of the outbreak can, as of now, only be traced to chopped romaine lettuce from the growing region of Yuma, Arizona.

Three of those patients developed a type of kidney failure associated with an E. coli illness called hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can be life-threatening.

The CDC reports cases in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Washington, Idaho, Missouri, Connecticut and New Jersey has the most outbreaks.

The size of the outbreak grew from 17 people in seven states on April 9, to the current count of 35 confirmed cases in 11 states as of April 13.

While government officials believe that the lettuce came from the Yuma, Arizona growing region, no specific grower, supplier, distributor, or brand has been identified.

Niki Forbing-Orr, public information manager for Idaho health and welfare, said most of the people affected are from the Treasure Valley but others also have been sickened in other parts of the state.

The C.D.C. said that 26 of 28 infected individuals surveyed reported eating a salad at a restaurant, with romaine lettuce being the only common ingredient.

To keep yourself and your family safe, the CDC recommends avoiding any romaine lettuce products that could be contaminated.

A case of E.coli has been linked to 35 cases of sickness reported in several states, including two in CT. Restaurants and retailers are not advised to avoid serving or selling any particular food. Before buying romaine lettuce at a grocery store or eating it at a restaurant, confirm that it is not chopped romaine lettuce from the Yuma growing region.

People who have been infected with E. coli bacteria can show symptoms like bloody diarrhea, vomiting and stomach pain, but will often recover within a span of a week.
