A supercharged jet stream is behind the drama

Just when you thought winter was over forecasters are warning that flooding and even snow could hit parts of the country from Sunday.

The Met Office has put the warning in place for the whole of the day with a downpour of rain expected between 6am and 5pm.

It is a big change from the glorious weather Britain basked in two weeks ago during the mini heatwave.

The severe weather warning comes just a week after the hottest April day for 70 years, when temperatures hit nearly 30 degrees Celsius.

Although it is now unclear how far west the heaviest rain will extend, accumulations of 25-40mm could occur quite widely with perhaps 50-70mm in places.

Driving conditions are expected to be hard and there is a low level risk of flooding as a result of the high-volume of rainfall.

She said "persistent, heavy rain and strong cold winds with temperatures stuck at only 5C (41F) or 6C (42.8F)' will bring 'Monday misery" and that strong wind could cause disruption to flights. Coming from an unusual (northerly) direction may increase the likelihood of wind-related impacts.

"Lastly it will be an unseasonably cold day - perhaps cold enough to produce some wet snow on high ground, although this seems unlikely to settle". Met Police have also issued warnings for most recent storm Clodagh which has affected areas of Britain and Ireland.

However, conditions are expected to improve throughout the week.

"The south and particularly the south east of England on Sunday and Monday is going to see some very, very wet weather, 25-40 millimetres of rain, ' Met Office meteorologist John West told Yahoo".

"Note that these winds will also lead to large waves, and spray and overtopping around some coasts".

"We advise people to listen to their local radio stations and remember not to drive through flood water as just 30cm of fast flowing water is enough to move your auto".
