Ferrari mechanic suffers double-break following Kimi Raikkonen pit stop

Ferrari mechanic suffers double-break following Kimi Raikkonen pit stop

Ferrari announced that it is now investigating as to why Raikkonen was given a green light when one wheel was yet to be changed.

"What happened to our guy Francesco today at the pit-stop is very unfortunate", said Raikkonen.

Hamilton also survived a clash with Red Bull's Max Verstappen as the Dutchman tried to pass on lap four at Turn One, the Dutchman's differential breaking as they touched when Verstappen pushed Hamilton wide and the Briton hung on. He was left with a rear left puncture and limped back to the pits for new tyres before retiring the vehicle due to damage from the early incident.

It was a disastrous few moments for Red Bull as Ricciardo pulled off track with a suspected electrical issue, triggering the virtual safety auto.

Toro Rosso-Honda's Pierre Gasly took a brilliant fourth place. But, Bottas was quicker off the line and passed Kimi's Ferrari before turn 1.

With Ferrari seemingly committed to keeping Vettel out until the end, Bottas began to close the gap with 10 laps to go as the pair both duked their way through traffic. It was the German driver who first pitted for a fresh set of Soft tyres.

As a result, Vettel had to complete 39 laps on one set of soft tyres while Bottas' strategy meant he had the more durable medium compound to complete 37 laps to the flag after his pit stop.

In the lead, Hamilton was 5.3 seconds clear of Vettel after 22 laps, an advantage trimmed to half a second by lap 25 with Bottas five seconds adrift in third.

Raikkonen was given the green light to exit before his left rear tyre had been changed, with the Finn's vehicle then hitting a mechanic who was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg while the driver retired.

The German beat Valtteri Bottas to the win by less than a second after Mercedes appeared to have outsmarted Ferrari at the pit stops.

A Ferrari mechanic suffered a fractured shinbone and fibula after accidentally being run over by Kimi Raikkonen during the Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday.

The mistake forced Raikkonen to retire from the race in the pit lane and Ferrari was fined €50,000 by the FIA for an unsafe release.

With margins tight between Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes, Vettel suggests the next race in China may be just as tough.

This left Bottas as the lone driver to challenge a rapidly fading Vettel. Essentially, Vettel would limp his vehicle home, with two faster-paced Mercedes chasing him down. Hamilton's Mercedes team-mate Valtteri Bottas was third.

Ahead of him was Nico Hulkenberg in sixth place for Renault F1 and Kevin Magnussen fifth for Haas-Ferrari, confirming both Haas' pace shown in Australia and also how incredibly tight the midfield battle is. Marcus Ericsson who started down in 17th place finished 9th for Alfa Romeo Sauber ahead of Force India's Esteban Ocon. A tally of 65 points sees Ferrari in the lead of the Constructors championship, with Mercedes second with 55 points and McLaren third with 22 points.
