Synthetic cannabinoids claims first death in Illinois

The number of severe-bleeding cases linked to the use of synthetic pot has grown to 32 people in seven IL counties, according to the state Department of Public Health.

While numerous cases report acquiring the synthetic cannabinoid products in the Chicagoland area, contaminated products could be in counties across the state.

Yesterday (March 29), the Chicago Tribune reported that that number had risen to 22, a figure that included cases dating back to March 7. Dr. Melissa Millewich, an emergency room physician at an IL hospital, said it's a new symptom for the drug, which some erroneously view as a safe alternative to pot. "This bleeding is not expected, at least in such a significant population so quickly", says one area ER physician.

Synthetic marijuana, also called K2 or spice, isn't a substitute for marijuana, Live Science reported in 2016.

Synthetic cannabinoids are a class of chemicals that bind to cannabinoid receptors in the body, but that are different from the natural cannabinoids in cannabis plants.

Bolger said if you've smoked the synthetic drug and are bleeding, you need to tell doctors exactly what you've done.

The state health department warns these over-the-counter alternatives are not safe and may affect the brain much more powerfully than marijuana. The Department of Health, meanwhile, attempted to shut down the idea that this product- often dubbed fake weed, K2 or spice-was in any way safer than regular marijuana.

"It's really hard to know what might be in them or how people might react to the ingredients", says Pontones.

Anyone who starts experiencing symptoms, including severe bleeding or bruising, should be taken to the hospital immediately, the IDPH said. So why are people in IL losing excess blood after smoking some spice? They are likewise sold in the city, she stated, and those encountering the draining said they got the items in comfort stores and from merchants and companions. Users have reported bleeding from their eyes and ears, as well as extremely heavy menstrual bleeding or bleeding disproportionately from an injury.
