Apple now powered by 100% renewable energy - will suppliers follow suit?
This line of reasoning allows the company to meet its goals in areas of the world where relying on renewable energy isn't necessarily viable; for example, clean energy isn't readily available in areas like China where Apple operates overseas facilities.
Alphabet's Google past year purchased enough renewable energy to cover all of its electricity consumption worldwide. The tech giant on Monday, April 9, said it has fulfilled its goal of powering all its facilities in 43 countries with renewable energy.
For Apple CEO Tim Cook, energy conservation and sustainable development initiatives are a matter of pride, and he vows to keep to this uplifting task in the future as well.
Not everyone on social media believed it, however.

The iconic Apple headquarters in Cupertino, California, was built with renewables in mind from day one, with the roof of the building covered in a 17 MW rooftop solar installation that is paired with 4 MW of biogas fuel cells. In some cases, the company is putting renewables back into the grid to help offset the fossil fuels it uses. It means Apple Inc. now has the commitment of as many as 23 suppliers helping it to go completely green. We collaborated for over two years to help build this program, which passes the costs directly to corporate buyers, while adding more low-priced, renewable electricity to the state's energy mix. It's a stunning achievement, and being done by the world's most profitable company is a resounding statement for those who think renewable energy simply costs too much.
Collectively, the 25 projects have a generation capacity of 626 megawatts, with 286 megawatts of solar PV generation coming online in 2017, its most ever in one year. These partners include, DSM Engineering Plastics, Arkema and Pegatron. By purchasing these certificates, Apple simply supports other projects that are compatible with its clean-energy principles. The leather that ECCO produces for Apple is of European origin, with tanning and cutting occurring at facilities in the Netherlands and China.
As we expand our data centers across the USA and globally, we will keep working with new partners to help make this a cost-effective choice available to everyone. Its entire global supply chain-which makes parts and accessories for Apple's products-is still working on it. So this announcement feels like a classic Apple product release.
The catch is that many of Apple's manufacturing partners still don't use renewable energy. Co., which produces solder masks for printed circuit boards in Japan.
