Long Island Braces For 'Significant Winter Storm'

Many New York-Area Services Shut as Latest Nor'easter Hits

Parts of eastern Long Island are digging out from a foot-and-a-half of snow from the fourth nor'easter in three weeks. Shutting New York City schools Wednesday meant the district's administration of free SAT tests in high schools was postponed a month.

The jet stream, the upper level river of air that guides weather, is stuck in a plunging pattern that brings plenty of moisture from the south up the East Coast, said Brian Hurley, senior forecaster at the National Weather Service's Weather Prediction Center.

4,400 Flights within, to or from the United States that were scrapped, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.

Yet another nor'easter is tearing through the Northeast, bringing heavy snow and gusty winds to Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia and NY this afternoon.

Metro-North railroad has resumed regular weekday service, though it's had some weather-related delays.

He stressed that snowstorms in March are not uncommon and that the region's overall snowfall for the winter and early spring is not unusually high despite several nor'easters. The storm will affect the region Wednesday into Thursday. Throughout the day on Saturday we will see snow from Iowa to Virginia and rain from southern IL through to the Carolinas.

Snowfall was reported in Cincinnati, Louisville and through most of West Virginia, Maryland and Virginia by sunrise Wednesday.

Around 28,000 electricity customers were already without power in Virginia and West Virginia.

But not everyone was sick of the snow. Meanwhile, an 87-year-old woman with dementia was found dead in the snow Thursday morning.

"If the snow keeps me away from school, I'm fine with it", Miles said.
