Cricket Australia has handed skipper Smith and vice-captain Warner 12-month suspensions from global and domestic cricket following an investigation. "We have chose to bar them from this season", he said.

Smith and Warner have also been barred from this year's Indian Premier League, losing contracts worth almost $2 million each, while Bancroft received a nine-month ban from all worldwide and domestic cricket.

After the match, it was confirmed by officials that sandpaper was used to roughen the ball.

Lehmann said: "I'm not going to resign as was said [by CA chief executive James Sutherland]". Global sport is tough with so much of work going on behind the scenes and when things like this happen‚ definitely we feel sympathy to the person who has made the mistake and has to pay the price for it in whatever way.

Smith was charged with knowledge of the potential plan, but Warner was found guilty of the development of the plan by providing "of advice to a junior player (Bancroft) regarding how a ball could be artificially altered including demonstrating how it could be done".

Steve Smith and David Warner have received year-long bans over the ball tampering scandal.

"Like all of Australia, we are extremely disappointed and as a team we know we have let so many people down and for that I am truly sorry".

All three players have been encouraged to keep playing club-level cricket to help rebuild relations with the cricketing community and have been instructed to complete 100 hours of voluntary service to cricket.

"Hussey, who is now the batting coach of IPL franchise Chennai Super Kings, said a player is always remembered more for how he played the game than the runs or wickets he gathered".

2 firefighters dead, 2 injured in building collapse in York
Assistant Chief Greg Altland and firefighter Eric Swanson were also injured in the wall collapse, but are expected to recover. Regarding the investigation, city police Chief Troy Bankert said police have no reason to believe this is or isn't arson.

Smith has been sent back to Australia along with Cameron Bancroft and David Warner following Cricket Australia's internal investigation into the ball-tampering debacle that has knocked the stuffing out of world cricket.

Wicketkeeper Tim Paine will take over the captaincy for the fourth and final Test starting in Johannesburg Friday, with hosts South Africa leading a bad-tempered series 2-1 as Matt Renshaw, Glenn Maxwell and Joe Burns fly to South Africa to replace the exiled trio.

He promised a change in approach to the game from Australia, reeling not only from the scandal but accusations of boorish behaviour and playing contrary to the spirit of the game.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan also expressed his opinion, "Steve Smith I think is a good guy who made a huge mistake ... For that reason, I don't think the punishment is fitting the crime".

"With what these players will lose out on I am sure the shock wave will do its job".

Lehmann was speaking to Australian media only, after local South African journalists and worldwide news agencies were barred from the news conference.

"There's a feeling in Australia this isn't just a one-off incident", he said.

"We need to change how we play and the boundaries within which we play", he said. "Lastly, world cricket need to take this opportunity to set new standards for on field play and Australia need to lead the way & gain respect from everyone and give all the young boys and girls a reason to want to play cricket and be proud of our national team".

Warner, however, will never captain Australia again.
