2018 NFL free agency: Bills have 'some interest' in QB Sam Bradford

Sam Bradford

It's a move that will be made official when free agency officially opens up on Wednesday.

But instead it is Bradford who will replace the retired Carson Palmer in Arizona.

The Bradford news came less than 24 hours after reports said fellow former Vikings quarterback Case Keenum was set to sign with the Denver Broncos, and former Redskins QB Kirk Cousins will sign with the Vikings. They turned down his request last summer for a one-year, $4 million extension.

The former Heisman Trophy victor and first-round pick by the St. Louis Rams in 2010 has made $114 million over his career, but injuries have haunted Bradford.

According to ESPN and NFL.com, the 30-year-old's one-year contract - for which $15m of the $20m is guaranteed - also contains an option for a second season at another $20m, meaning he could ultimately earn $40m through 2019. He has spent the last two seasons with Minnesota but only played two games in the 2017 season after becoming injured. He's a career 62.5 percent passer with a 1.77 touchdown-to-interception rate.

In short, he could be the flawless bridge quarterback for a team that'll pick No. 15 overall in April's draft.

The Cardinals needed a quarterback, so going for a veteran makes sense.

However, amid his impressive showing, Bradford suffered a noncontact injury to his left knee - the same knee in which he has torn his ACL twice. He started 15 games for the Vikings in 2016, completing 71.6-percent of his passes for 3,877 yards and 20 touchdowns.

After being named National Football League offensive rookie of the year in 2010, Bradford tore his left ACL in the 2013 and 2014 seasons.

Bradford is not a stop-gap solution, he's a guy who will likely spend the season battling injuries while the backup quarterback gets ready to fill in.
