Suspected CMU shooter was hospitalized Thursday for 'drug-related' incident
Earlier Friday police said they were in contact with Davis Thursday night when they took him to the hospital for a drug-related incident. He also would not say what type of gun was used or whether it was Davis Sr.'s service revolver.
James Eric Davis Jr., a 19-year-old sophomore, was arrested early Saturday after he was seen on a train passing through the north end of campus, the university said. Hours after a campus lockdown, police started a "slow, methodical removal" of staff and students who were ordered to take shelter in campus buildings, Lt. Larry Klaus said, adding that he "should be considered armed and unsafe". Though his father was a police officer, CMU is a gun-free zone and only active law enforcement officers are allowed to have guns on campus.
A family friend said things may have gone differently if Davis, Jr.'s parents had known about the problems he had been dealing with.
Yet Yeagley said that when officers determined that the person posed no threat - and reviewed video from the elevator that showed Davis and that person laughing and no sign of a threat - Davis said he was fine and was leaving campus Friday for spring break.
He is in custody and under guard until medical professionals clear him for transport. "At that point he was released to the hospital staff", Klaus said.
The gun that Davis Jr. allegedly used was his father's.
"We thank God that this incident ended quickly, and the suspect has been apprehended", Ross said. Davis claimed this person had a gun but was very vague on why he wanted to harm him, according to police.
The identities of the two MI victims, as well as details on whether the suspect was a student and the type of weapon used, were not immediately released. Authorities said that the person did not have any weapons registered to them and they didn't believe there was a threat to Davis Jr.

The NCAA's ruling can not change the accomplishments or the excitement generated by our Cardinals basketball team. Not long after, Pitino was ousted by the university - but not before filing a wrongful termination lawsuit.
However, around three to four hours later, Yeagley said officers in the area saw Davis, Jr.in the hallway with a number of suitcases and bags, acting in a fashion "that is not reasonable or logical".
The university identified the two dead as Davis' mother, Diva Davis, and father, James Davis Sr., a part-time police officer in the Chicago suburb of Bellwood.
Those at the gathering agreed with Fleming, saying Davis, Jr. was in need of prayers as well.
"He stayed until the following morning when he was picked up by his parents and came back to Campbell Hall". Davis appeared to be hypothermic and "not making a lot of sense" when police arrested him, the chief said. The shots were said to have come from the fourth floor of Campbell Hall, which is a residence hall.
Charges against Davis. Jr. were pending.
The campus and the surrounding community were placed on lock down during the manhunt for Davis, Jr. that involved local, state and federal agencies.
University officials announced at 3:00 p.m. (2000 GMT) that students were finally being escorted out of buildings by police. He said police surrounded the railroad tracks and conducted a search of nearby Mill Pond Park.
