No announcement is imminent, Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Isgur Flores said in a statement.

McCabe took a leave of absence in January following reports that President Donald Trump and Sessions tried to pressure FBI Director Chris Wray to fire McCabe.

Though Trump has criticized McCabe as biased in favor of Clinton, the story in question actually undercut that narrative and suggested that Federal Bureau of Investigation officials wanted to more actively probe the Clinton Foundation but were discouraged from taking more aggressive steps by the Obama Justice Department. Sykes pointed out that the recommendation to fire McCabe was made by career people at the DOJ. The report is expected to say that McCabe misled the inspector general when questioned about his actions.

"FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe is racing the clock to retire with full benefits".

McCabe's wife, Jill McCabe, received hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions in 2015 from a political committee controlled by then-Virginia Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe, a close ally of the Clintons.

The recommendation from officials with the Office of Professional Responsibility was sent to Justice Department leaders but has not been acted on yet, said the person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person wasn't authorized to speak publicly about an internal personnel matter. "That yet-to-be-released report triggered an F.B.I. disciplinary process that recommended his termination - leaving Mr. Sessions to either accept or reverse that decision".

Trump has repeatedly called for McCabe's firing over the past several months, which leaves whatever decision Sessions makes open to partisan criticism.

"Why didn't A.G. Sessions replace Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe, a Comey friend who was in charge of Clinton investigation", the president demanded to know last June.

The Wall Street Journal report was written by Devlin Barrett, who is now a reporter with The Washington Post.

A McCabe associate spoke to the Wall Street Journal in October 2016 for an article about a bureaucratic standoff between the FBI and Justice Department over its various investigations into Clinton. Recently released Federal Bureau of Investigation text messages show that Barrett had talked with the FBI's top spokesman, Michael Kortan, and Federal Bureau of Investigation lawyer Lisa Page, who worked for McCabe, two days before it was published.
