The Israeli military said it was looking into the incident.

Muhammad Fadel al-Tamimi was released hours after his detention, with his family adding that he has a reconstructive skull surgery scheduled for March 5.

Ahed, who spent her 17th birthday in Israeli prison, is now being prosecuted behind closed doors in an Israeli military court that has a conviction rate of over 99 percent. Several members of the family have been detained and killed over the years.

As the Israeli columnist Gideon Levy reported, the boy had spent three months in an Israeli military prison past year, when he was 14, after being accused of throwing rocks at an Israeli army jeep that had broken down near the entrance to the village.

He was released later Monday after being questioned, Israel's army said.

"The above-mentioned patient presented to our hospital on 15/12/2017 immediately after a bullet injury (head trauma) by Israeli soldiers (left maxillary area entrance, no exit wound)", the document begins.

"Muhammad is critically injured because of the occupation, and they put his life in even more danger last night", Bassem said, adding "this just proves they don't care about any global opinion, human rights or worldwide law".

The arrest and prosecution of Ahed Tamimi, for the slap she says was motivated by anger over the shooting of her cousin Mohammed, has created a public relations crisis for Israel, since it has been widely condemned internationally, including by prominent entertainers like the American comedian Sarah Silverman.

The Tamimi family said in response that "Israel has gone out of its mind in its attempt to discredit our family".

"We have become a symbol of nonviolent resistance, and they [Israel] don't want the voice of Palestine to be heard from anywhere or anyone", Bassem said, "who knows what they will do next".

Tamimi was among 16 terror suspects arrested overnight Sunday in Nabi Saleh in Samaria.

The Tamimi family statement also noted that this attempt to deny that Mohammed had been shot by an Israeli soldier followed a weird claim from another senior Israeli official who argued that Ahed and her cousins were unrelated actors only pretending to be oppressed by Israel. She had heard that Israeli soldiers shot her cousin just minutes before.

Ahed was arrested in the midnight from her house. It was not immediately clear whether the others arrested had been released.

According to prisoners rights group Addameer, as of January 2018, there were 330 Palestinian children being held in Israeli prison.
