Across the country, "we've had 16 school shootings since the beginning of the year, just about one a week", Hoyer said.

After gunfire rang out at Maryland's Great Mills High School on Tuesday, Representative Roger Williams (R-Texas) said he believes that his school security bill could prevent similar incidents.

Attempts to reach his family were unsuccessful.

The shooter, identified as Austin Rollins, was pronounced dead at 10:41 a.m., Cameron said.

"He did a very, very good job", said Sharon Eglinton, manager of a cafe in nearby Leonardtown.

"I was appalled and angered to learn of the shooting at Great Mills High School today".

MedStar St. Mary's Hospital in Leonardtown said in a statement Wednesday that the 14-year-old boy was discharged as of noon.

Two students are injured - one of which is in critical condition - after a school shooting took place Tuesday at Great Mills High School in southern Maryland.

Cameron said Rollins pulled out a Glock semiautomatic pistol in a hallway of the school and opened fire.

A school resource officer engaged the shooter after he started firing, quickly containing the situation, Cameron told reporters.

Rollins died after a confrontation with the officer.

Investigators are still working to determine which bullets struck which individuals.

The wounded girl, 16-year-old Jaelynn Willey, remains in critical condition at the University of Maryland Prince George's Hospital Center.

Mostly, Foreman said she felt sorrow for Rollins' family, and the two victims.

"It sure sounds like this is exactly the way that it should have been handled", Governor Hogan said.

The state of Maryland prohibits anyone under the age of 21 from having certain firearms, such as handguns or assault weapons.

The Great Mills shooting comes about five weeks after a massacre at a Florida high school left 14 students and three adult staff members dead and sparked a grassroots campaign for tougher laws on gun ownership.

St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said during an afternoon press conference it's not yet known if Rollins was shot by the SRO. Authorities have not released his name.

Cameron initially said the 14-year-old student was shot by Rollins, but he later indicated that the exact circumstances were still unclear.

Nearly immediately, Davis was embraced by Florida shooting survivor Delaney Tarr, a student who has since told lawmakers they will be voted out of office if they fail to pass gun safety measures.

"This [Great Mills High School] armed school resource officer, you're not hearing anyone in #MSM talk about it because it disrupts their narrative", NRA spokeswoman Dana Loesch said in one of several tweets Tuesday.

Deputies say Rollins and the girl who was shot had a relationship in the past.

The 17-year-old shooter likely did not have legal authorization to possess the gun.

Gaskill responded to the scene in less than a minute, the sheriff said.

The shooter was identified as 17-year-old Austin Rollins, who died Tuesday. It also includes another $50 million annually to pay for school resource officers, counselors and technology.

This wasn't the first time Gaskill, who has been with the sheriff's office for six years, thwarted a potentially deadly situation.

It's the latest school shooting in a country still reeling from last month's attack in Parkland, Florida that killed 17.

The sheriff's office confirmed an incident at the school and urged parents in a Twitter post not to approach the campus.
