Russia mourns victims of deadly shopping mall fire in Siberia

Russia holds nationwide day of mourning for Kemerovo tragedy victims

The events dedicated to the memory about the fire victims have started yesterday in a number of the Russian regions, including Simferopol, Sochi, Rostov-on-Don, Kabardino-Balkaria, the Urals Federal District, Chelyabinsk, Omsk, Orenburg, Tambov, most regions of the central and north-western Russia, St. Petersburg.

"The ministry's supervisory body specialists are focusing on the work of alarm and fire-extinguishing systems, emergency exit routes and fire extinguishing equipment", the ministry said.

The authorities have made efforts to show concern, with President Vladimir Putin visiting the scene and upbraiding officials, although some observers criticised the official reaction as insufficient and belated. Officials say 64 people died in Sunday's fire. "People, children came to relax", Putin said. He is one of two arrested and three detained in connection with the case so far.

"Why? Because of some criminal negligence, because of slovenliness".
