Documentary About Russian Sports Doping Wins Oscar

Netflix didn't take home any Oscars for its critically beloved film, Mudbound, but it did get a win for Icarus, an explosive documentary about the Russian sports doping scandal.

Icarus managed to beat fellow documentaries Abacus, Last Men in Aleppo, Strong Island and Face Places to the award with Fogel praising the work of the now-hidden Rochenkov.

Before it blew the lid on a Russian doping scandal, Icarus was already a stranger-than-fiction endeavor.

Fogel was pointed in the direction of Russia's head of anti-doping Grigory Rodchenkov, who was originally utilised to devise a doping programme to see Fogel ride the Haute Route while also remaining undetected by anti-doping controls.

Rodchenkov, who is under US protection, fled to the United States in 2016 after producing documents obtained during his years as Russia's anti-doping lab director which describe an elaborate ruse by Russian Federation and its athletes to evade doping tests.

Netflix reportedly paid $5 million to acquire the film. The plot was so bold that is prompted the International Olympic Committee to ban Russian Federation from the Olympic games in South Korea. The idea for the movie, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival, was sparked by disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France wins in 2012 when he confessed to doping. Fearing for his life, Rodchenkov fled to the US with Fogel's help and confessed on camera that he oversaw the swapping out of hundreds of athletes' urine samples during the Sochi games.

Bryan Fogel and Dan Cogan, the director and producer of Icarus, accepted the Best Documentary award at the Oscars 2018 ceremony on Sunday in Los Angeles.
