As election results for three northeastern states come in, one thing which clearly emerges is the massive surge in BJP's vote share. However, the anti-Left space, which was with the Congress, has now completely shifted to the BJP. Polling was held in 59 seats in 1988, while it was countermanded in one seat due to the death of the CPI (M) candidate.
Reportedly, the BJP and its ally Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT) gained the upper hand in 42 seats of the 60-strong legislative assembly. Constituencies in Tripura are largely small, with around 60,000 to 65,000 voters per constituency.
