Powerful winds delay more Olympic skiing events and force park's closure

In Pyeongchang, High Winds Are No Breeze for Athletes

American Mikaela Shiffrin admitted that despite raring to get her Olympic quest for a multiple medal haul under way the decision to postpone Wednesday's wind-lashed slalom was the correct one.

The women's giant slalom was to feature 81 skiers, headlined by competition favourite Mikaela Shiffrin of the United States.

Female Alpine skiers aren't the only ones who have dealt with weather issues at the 2018 Olympics.

"It's good to have a good race and to go to bed happy with my performance", said Ligety, who also won gold in giant slalom in Sochi.

The rescheduled event will coincide with the men's super giant slalom in Jeongseon.

The slalom is a race Shiffrin has dominated for five years, including her Olympic gold as a teenager and three consecutive world titles.

According to Matt Renoux, our reporter in PyeongChang, it was windy and snowing shortly before the delayed start time.

On Wednesday at Yongpyong, snow was falling and wind blowing this way and that.

"It's pretty insane to think that it was 12 years ago since my first Olympic event and at the same time it does feel like yesterday if I think about it".

Vonn, With Her Dog Watching, Says She's Ready for Her Last Olympics
The 33-year-old, who won downhill gold in Vancouver 2010 , said: 'I want so badly to do well for him. Vonn said her increased mental strength really comes into play when she's in the starting gate.

Tuesday's race came one day before the 12-year anniversary of his gold medal win the combined in Turin, which he said felt like both a recent event and in distant past.

But Shiffrin says she has arrived in Korea refreshed and ready for the challenge.

On February 4, Shiffrin tweeted she could not wait for her first event, but all Shiffrin has done is wait as high winds have caused several events be postponed.

"I've spent a lot of today walking backwards", said British Olympics visitor Elliott Edmonson.

Of the weather delays, Paul Kristofic, the women's head alpine coach, said: "Everyone is a little bummed out when a day like this happens, but they do happen, so we're quite used to it". However, if the American has a bad day at the office, her rival will step forward to punish her.

"It is unfortunate that we weren't able to race today, but it is important we have a fair race for all of the athletes and today's conditions would definitely not have been fair".

Organisers were hopeful the women's slalom could be staged this morning before conditions began to worsen.

"Neither of those were achievable today".
