President Donald Trump shakes hands with Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) annual meeting in Davos, eastern Switzerland, on January 25, 2018.

The pair met at the World Economic Forum in Davos, their first face-to-face talks since the United States president cancelled a planned visit to London to open the new U.S. embassy. "We have the same ideas, the same ideals", Trump told the United Kingdom prime minister Thursday, turning to her directly.

"Some people don't necessarily believe that but I can tell you I have tremendous respect for the prime minister and the job she's doing".

Countries across the world must do more to foster free trade than just talk about it, British Prime Minister Theresa May said at the World Economic Forum in Davos.

May also addressed the dynamic between the two countries but was generally less enthusiastic, and impersonal, in her description of her relationship with Trump.

White House national security adviser H.R. McMaster said Trump will meet with Britain's May to discuss North Korea, the Syrian civil war and the Iran nuclear deal, which lifted sanctions on Iran and which Trump has vowed to abandon unless changes can be made.

Trump and May clashed in November when the latter condemned his decision to re-tweet anti-Muslim propaganda from a far-right group, Britain First. Earlier this month, he pulled out of a potential February trip for the opening of a new USA embassy in London.

May has also been critical of Trump's travel ban and London Mayor Sadiq Khan called for the leader to withdraw her offer for Trump to make a state visit.

The United States is committed to "help build a world where everyone can prosper, and every child can grow up free from poverty and fear", Trump said. The two leaders reiterated their desire for a strong trading relationship post-Brexit, which would be in the interests of both countries.

"Klaus actually told me this is a crowd like they have never had before in Davos, including all of you people [journalists], like they've never had before, so that's good", Trump said.
