This person wasn't authorized to publicly discuss Bannon's interactions with Mueller and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity. Bannon joined the campaign after the June 2016 meeting and shed little light on the meeting with Russians, the sources said.

Earlier Tuesday, a White House official said the president did not invoke executive privilege to prevent Bannon from answering the committee's questions.

Bannon refused to speak not only about his time at the White House, but also any conversations he had with President Trump after he had left the administration "that might be for the objective of the President seeking his advice on anything", Schiff said.

'He quickly informed, through his counsel, the committee he was not going to answer questions that pertained to meetings, conversations, events, etc., that took place wither during the transition or while he was part of the administration, ' said Rep. Adam Schiff, the committee's top Democrat.

On Tuesday, Bannon testified in closed session before the House Intelligence Committee about the campaign.

Some legal experts said the subpoena could be a sign that the investigation was intensifying, while others said it might simply have been a negotiating tactic to persuade Bannon to cooperate with the investigation.

Judge Andrew Napolitano said Steve Bannon will be entering a "very unsafe environment" when he interviews with Special Counsel Robert Mueller's team.

Nunes declined to discuss why or what questions he hoped to compel Bannon to answer.

Lewandowski said on Fox Business Network's "Mornings with Maria" Wednesday that he was not instructed by the White House to withhold any information.

On Fox News, he said Bannon was trying to assert a privilege that does not exist. A Reuters report said the former top Trump aide refused to comply with the subpoena. "That's how the rules work".

Categories of those screenshots include "anti-Caucasian postings" and "Googler reactions to the Damore memo". It goes on to say that these dissenters were internally blacklisted due to their views.

Trump has since been quoted as saying Bannon has "lost his mind" and even gave him the nickname of "Sloppy Steve".

"Even if you thought that this was not treasonous, or unpatriotic, or bad s--, and I happen to think it's all of that, you should have called the Federal Bureau of Investigation immediately", Bannon said.

Hicks met last month with special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his investigation, which appears to be focused on both Russian meddling and whether Trump sought to obstruct justice during his firing of James Comey as FBI director.

The agents were unaware at the time that Bannon had retained Washington lawyer William Burck just hours earlier, according to two people familiar with the events that took place on January 9.

Bill Burck, a lawyer for Mr Bannon, could not immediately be reached for comment. Schiff said that information wasn't relayed to most members of the committee until the morning of the interview, prompting frustration among lawmakers.

Bannon may not be valuable in the White House, but he could be indispensable on the campaign trail.

"We said 'Hey, hey, pump the brakes, '" the official said.

Bannon was quizzed voluntarily behind closed doors by the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee, the first time he has testified in the probe investigating whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation in its bid to influence the 2016 United States elections.

But a source familiar with Bannon's thinking told The Daily Beast that the right-wing provocateur will answer any questions that Mueller's team asks, adding, "Mueller will hear everything Bannon has to say". Mueller has reportedly been interested in a series of misleading statements that emerged about that meeting.
