Democrats Pick Up Wisconsin State Senate Seat in District Trump Won by 17 Points

Democrats Score Special Election Victory In Wisconsin GOP Stronghold

Additionally, the Democratic candidate for governor won a rather stunning margin over his Republican opponent - another possible indicator of a tough year ahead for Republicans. "Thom Tillis of North Carolina - are attempting the hard trick of reaching toward the center with one hand while patting President Trump's back with the other".

Taken by itself, this race doesn't change much about the outlook for 2018. CNN's Chris Cillizza puts a number to it. Trump won the district by 17 points in 2016, and Sheila Harsdoft (who left the seat to become the state's agriculture secretary) won it in the same election by 26 points. "That trend is beginning to rightly alarm smart Republicans".

The biggest news is an upset in Wisconsin's 10th Senate District, where Democrat Patty Schachtner, a medical examiner, beat Republican Adam Jarchow, a member of the state Assembly, by 9 points.

Schachtner won a northwestern Wisconsin Senate district that went for Donald Trump by 17 points in 2016. Conservative groups Americans for Prosperity and the Republican State Leadership Committee both ran ads supporting Jarchow and Republican state Sen.

That said, Republicans will still hold a 18-14 majority in Wisconsin.

Schachtner, who will be sworn in February 13 in Madison, also said her message calling for treatment for people suffering from addiction and more access to mental and physical health care resonated with 10th District voters.

He adds that the concern voiced by Walker, who is up for re-election in November, is well-placed. She won by 11 points - a dramatic 28-point swing for Democrats.

Trump Calls For DACA Fix, Still Wants Wall
But in the meeting he indicated a willingness to compromise with Democrats, whose votes are needed in the narrowly divided Senate. Trump also said he hoped to pursue a "comprehensive" immigration bill after lawmakers strike a deal on the dreamers.

A Democratic victory in one of Wisconsin's Republican-leaning districts is "a wake up call for Republicans" in the state, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker has said, as the party prepares for a vicious fight to maintain control of US Congress this year.

Kelda Roys, a former state representative who's seeking the Democratic nomination to challenge Walker, said Schachtner's win "shows that people want something different".

"From collective bargaining reform and Right to Work to welfare reform, everything we have done is at risk if we don't win in November", Walker said Wednesday in a fundraising letter. The state needs to fully fund rural school districts so that teachers can be paid a living wage and so the teaching profession is once again a desired career path.

Jarchow, in a break from fellow Republicans, opposed the deal.

Ms Schachtner's victory was a surprise.

But Democrats banked that anti-Trump backlash could even the playing field.
