Iraqi court sentences German woman to death over joining IS group

It is estimated that more than 27,000 foreign fighters, including 6000 Europeans, have travelled to Iraq and Syria since the start of the Arab Spring in 2011 but not all of them joined IS, according to data published by the Soufran Group.

However, the spokesman refused to identify the criminal by name, the agency stated, adding that she could appeal the sentence.

An Iraqi court has condemned a German woman to death after she was found guilty of belonging to the jihadist group. Scotland Yard has released her on bail while it continues its investigation. Upon reaching the group, both of her daughters married ISIS members.

Bayrkdar said on Sunday (Monday NZ Time) that she was found guilty of "offering logistic support and helping the terrorist group to carry out criminal acts", and "taking part in attacks against security forces".

Others are said to have escaped by blending in with civilians fleeing the fighting.

Fellow German Linda Wenzel, 17, who joined the death cult in 2016, was also captured last summer and now faces being executed as well.
