Google Reveals How it Protected Gmail from Spectre and Meltdown

Papermaster said AMD will release "optional microcode updates" to mitigate the Spectre vulnerabilities on systems running Ryzen and EPYC processors beginning this week.

In the fallout of the discovery of Spectre and Meltdown, companies have been racing to patch vulnerabilities. For example, Google yesterday reported that it had developed a "moonshot" mitigation for Spectre that has no material effect on the workload performance of its cloud customers. This affects not just those using client-based Broadwell or Haswell processors but data centers as well.

"We are working quickly with these customers to understand, diagnose and address this reboot issue", Shenoy promised.

In a confidential document shared with some of its customers, Intel said it has identified three issues in updates released over the past week.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Intel is asking datacentre customers to delay installing patches because the patches have bugs of their own.

Intel is now looking into reports that some of its customers are experiencing reboots in systems that update to the latest firmware for Meltdown/Spectre mitigation.

"We are working closely with them to correct an issue that paused the distribution of patches for some older AMD processors (AMD Opteron, Athlon and AMD Turion X2 Ultra families) earlier this week", Papermaster wrote".

While researchers who identified Spectre and Meltdown had warned that software patches could cause device performance hits of up to 30 percent, companies rolling out fixes are finding the impacts can vary widely.

The company is not giving the same advice to consumers, however, with Navin stating, "End-users should continue to apply updates recommended by their system and operating system providers".

Hackers may exploit the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities to steal sensitive data stored in computers and mobile devices through a side-channel analysis attack.
