Funding Vote Fails, Federal Government to Shutdown

Vice President also attacked Democrats in a statement while flying to Egypt to begin a trip around the Middle East. Needing 60 votes, the GOP managed only 50 (Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell had yet to cast his ballot as of publication), with a handful of red-state Democrats and rebellious Republicans (including Rand Paul and Mike Lee) crossing party lines. The president watched the results from the White House residence, dialing up allies and affirming his belief that Democrats would take the blame for the shutdown, said a person familiar with his conversations but not authorized to discuss them publicly. Chuck Schumer, on threatening a shutdown over protections for illegal immigrants who came to the country while they were young, or "dreamers".
House passes stopgap spending bill, Senate fate uncertain
About a third, 31%, say they would hold the Democrats in Congress responsible, and another 10% say they'd blame all three groups. Lindsey Graham , a Republican from SC threatened to vote against a short-term spending bill, as did Rand Paul of Kentucky.
The Senate failed to reach a government funding deal by Friday's midnight deadline, leading to the first government shutdown since 2013.
Democratic and Republican leaders agreed to reopen negotiations on Saturday and said they were committed to getting a quick agreement.

"It still surprises me - and I've been through some of these before - that the Democrats in the Senate are opposing a bill that they don't oppose", Mulvaney said.
The last USA shutdown happened in 2013 and lasted for 16 days. Congress has until March 5 to vote on a replacement for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, and "there's absolutely no reason to tie these two things together right now", Mulvaney said. In recent weeks Dreamers and pro-immigration activists have been holding protests and sit-ins in Washington to pressure U.S. Democrats on including the protections in the spending bill.
