Carrie Gracie, BBC China editor, quits in protest at unequal pay

BBC editor quits in equal pay row

Yet, despite Ms Gracie being world renowned for her expertise, it is her letter castigating her bosses for double standards that it is likely to have the greatest impact after she exposed the BBC's rank hypocrisy over equal pay.

In the open letter, Ms Gracie said "the BBC belongs to you, the licence fee payer".

"I think the scale of feeling, not just among BBC women but also just more widely across the country and also internationally, the support that I've had in the last few hours over this, I think it does speak to the depth of hunger for an equal, fair and transparent pay system".

The BBC says it is performing "considerably better" than other organisations on gender pay after journalist Carrie Gracie resigned citing pay inequality.

Gracie has got huge support for her decision since then.

Other senior women at the BBC offered support, including Clare Balding, Emily Maitlis and Sarah Montague.

Other well-known female broadcasters also used the #IStandWithCarrie hashtag to express their approval of the letter and the ex-China editor's departure.

In her letter Gracie said she had learned last year that of the four worldwide editors in the past four years at the BBC, two males had earned more than their female counterparts.

"I am not asking for more money".

A BBC spokesman said: "Fairness in pay is vital". STAND UP AND BE COUNTED for all women to be equal at work.

Speaking about her former role, Ms Gracie said: "I see the job of China editor as one of the most important and hard reporting jobs of our time".

"Michelle Stanistreet, general secretary of the National Union of Journalists, said: "[The letter] makes it clear what a hard decision it has been to speak out about what she calls a crisis of trust at the BBC, but why it is vital that the British public are clear about why she has been forced to resign her post".

The BBC said there was "no systemic discrimination against women".

Rather than waste money on an "unwinnable court fight against female staff, the BBC should immediately agree to independent arbitration to settle individual cases", she wrote. It is not men earning more because they do more of the jobs which pay better. "I simply want the BBC to abide by the law and value men and women equally".

The list published a year ago showed that two-thirds of the BBC's highest earners were men, with the highest-paid woman earning less than a quarter of the highest-earning male star.

After tweeting "wish me luck" earlier on Monday, Gracie was back on air presenting BBC Radio 4's Today program alongside John Humphrys, the BBC's highest-paid news presenter with a salary of between STG600,000 and STG649,999 (NZ$1.1m to NZ$1.22m). Many BBC men were also found to be receiving far higher salaries than women in comparable jobs.
