BJP, Cong joust in public court
On Wednesday, the hearing in the disputed matter turned into a political slugfest with lawyers for Muslim appellants, including senior counsel Kapil Sibal, questioning the "hurry" to hear the matter now and demanding that it be referred to a Constitution Bench and the hearing be put off till July 2019.
The BJP and the Congress engaged in a war of words after the Supreme Court on Tuesday adjourned the hearing on the Ayodhya title suit to February 8. In a statement to news agencies, Haji Mehboob, a litigant, said he was a member of the UP Sunni Wakf Board, and that Sibal was "our lawyer", but that his plea in court was "wrong". He, however, noted that the Congress has said the views expressed by Sibal, who represents the Sunni Waqf Board in the case in the Supreme Court, were his own.
The Hindus, however, claim that a Ram temple that originally stood there was demolished to construct the mosque.
The Waqf Board said it wanted speedy justice in the case and was not in favour of deferment.
Addressing BJP workers during his Gujarat election campaign in Dahod, Modi said, "The Sunni Waqf Board must be congratulated for their fearless stand and for disassociating themselves from the statement of Kapil Sibal".
"Yes, Kapil Sibal is our lawyer, but he is also related to a political party".
"But you dare say that the case should not be heard till 2019 elections".
"As far as Ram Mandir is concerned (Modiji), it will be built when Lord Ram wants it to be built", said Sibal. We want a solution to the issue at the earliest. Modi said now he understands why the Congress kept many issues unresolved, without elaborating but implying that it was done to derive political mileage.
"The hearing was taken up for the first time yesterday and BJP president Amit Shah gave reaction on Sibal's statement", he said, adding that this in itself was indicative of what will happen if the hearing was taken up on a daily basis. "We want to know whether or not the Congress party wants a speedy verdict on the Ram Temple". Modi asked the Congress. Attacking Shah, Surjewala said, "Will the BJP, RSS and Amit Shah tell the truth of allegations made by Nirmohi Akhada against the VHP in relation to a Rs 1,400 crore scam in the name of Ram temple?"
