Apple admits to slowing down old iPhones to improve battery life

As pointed out on Reddit and confirmed by benchmarking app GeekBench, newer versions of iOS have introduced measures that may prevent phones from running at their would-be peak performance, in cases where the battery can't handle it, either from age or environmental issues.

Some iPhone users have long suspected that Apple was intentionally slowing down older devices, while others have blamed the problem on glitches in new releases of the company's mobile operating system.

The admission played into concerns that Apple was stealthily nudging iPhone users to upgrade to newer models by letting them think it was the handsets that needed replacing and not just a matter of getting new batteries.

Apple has further delved into the issue of lithium-ion batteries on its website, which have a limited life span. Now, Poole is calling for the company to be more transparent with iPhone customers about expected performance over time. Filed by Stefan Bogdanovich and Dakota Speas, the suit claims that Apple's deliberate effort to throttle CPU performance on the iPhone amounts to "breach of contract". The company said they did this to ensure the health of your device, basically to guard against the sudden shutdowns.

Whether rooted in iOS updates or degradation of the internal hardware components, several iPhone users have had enough and, according to TMZ, are taking legal action as a result. In addition to, like, blowing up, battery life will be adversely effected if you are using your iPhone for an extended period in direct sunlight.

Apple said it wanted to "prolong the life" of customers' devices.

One solution to a faster working iPhone could be purchasing a new battery rather than an entire new phone. If you're going to slow down the phone over time, you should explain why it is happening, so people understand it is ultimately for their benefit. Unless the processors are capped with software that ties CPU performance to current (and over time, necessarily declining) battery conditions, they're created to shut the entire phone down when that happens.

Apple said in the statement that previous year the company released a feature for iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone SE aimed at "smoothing out the instantaneous peaks only when needed to prevent the device from unexpectedly shutting down during these conditions". People with the iPhone 7 and "other products" will soon get the update as well with iOS 11.2.
