Amazon just acquired smart home startup Blink

Amazon might be better known as the largest online retailer in the world, but the company's slow and steady entry into the smart home market was punctuated today with its purchase of smart camera and doorbell maker Blink. The camera gave Amazon a worthy alternative to Google's Nest, and now Blink could up the ante with the additional security component. That includes the recently announced Blink Video Doorbell. Apart from being affordable, Blink's products are also easy to set up - they all operate on batteries that the company says will keep its cameras and doorbell ticking for two years.

Whether or not Amazon plans to integrate Blink's technology into its delivery service or just have it under as an Amazon subsidiary, Blink will see significant growth under Amazon. Financial terms of the deal have not been disclosed at this stage, but the retailer is making a serious push into smart home and connected security products.

Amazon launched the wired Cloud Cam streaming video camera earlier this year.
