UCLA Proclaimed A 'New Era' For The Program After Hiring Chip Kelly

After four seasons in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles and San Francisco 49ers, the former Oregon Ducks head coach is finalizing a deal to become the new head coach of the UCLA Bruins, reports Yahoo!

Is this the right move for the Bruins?

UCLA Director of Athletics Dan Guerrero expressed being "thrilled" at welcoming Kelly to UCLA.

Kelly, meanwhile, met with UCLA officials earlier this week, according to multiple reports, as the Bruins look to replace Jim Mora, who they fired Sunday and immediately jumped in on Kelly. Kelly was named the Pac-10 Coach of the Year in back-to-back seasons in 2009 and 2010, and Associated Press Coach of the Year in 2010.

Kelly, who is now an analyst for ESPN, is also moving on to other potential landing spots with UCLA as the front runner if he decides to return to coaching.

Kelly spent four years at OR, leading them to a bowl game all four years.

After being fired from the Niners, Kelly joined ESPN as an NFL and college football analyst. He was slapped with "failure to monitor" in the Will Lyles case after he was accused of paying $25,000 to the 7-on-7 coach in exchange for him guiding players to the Ducks. The penalty for those sanctions ran out in 2014. The Eagles made the playoffs in Kelly's first season there in 2013, but he was sacked after going 6-9 in 2015 with a talented team that was widely viewed to have underachieved.

He went 28-35 with Philadelphia and San Francisco from 2013-16, including 2-14 in 2016 with the 49ers.

"I am pleased to welcome Chip Kelly to UCLA, confident that he will work tirelessly to focus on the whole student, both as an athlete and as a scholar", said UCLA Chancellor Gene Block. Mora was midway through his sixth season with the program.

UCLA does now have the nation's No. 14-ranked recruiting class for 2018 and has finished with a top-20 class the past three years.
