The second-term Republican senator from Kentucky and 2016 presidential candidate was attacked, allegedly by a next-door neighbor, Rene Boucher, 59, who was charged with fourth-degree assault. Stafford said this type of injury is marked by severe pain that can last for weeks to months.

According to the arrest warrant, Boucher walked onto Paul's property and tackled him from behind, forcing him to the ground.

"Senator Paul and Kelley appreciate everyone's thoughts and well wishes and he will be back fighting for liberty in the Senate soon", Stafford said in his statement Sunday.

"He's in some pain, but he's going to be fine", Robert Porter, Pual's friend said and added that Paul's come back to Washington will be a "game-time decision" but Paul is preparing to turn to work at some time in the following days. He has a court date scheduled for Thursday.
