Mobile And Sprint's Planned Merger Is A No-Go

T-Mobile may need a little self-confidence boost, because it looks like Sprint is leaving it at the altar.

Japanese internet and telecoms giant SoftBank is reportedly planning to put an end to merger negotiations between its Sprint subsidiary and T-Mobile US, after it failed to reach an agreement with Deutsche Telekom over the ownership of combined equity. This time around, per a report by Japan's Nikkei, Son's SoftBank became concerned it would lose control should T-Mobile tmus take over Sprint. These two companies came close in 2014 about the merging, but later due to some regulatory concerns called it off.

According to tentative terms of the deal that Reuters was first meant to report last month, Sprint Shareholders and SoftBank would have received near about 40% or bit extra with the joined company. T-Mobile has been making market share gains since launching its Un-carrier strategy a few years ago. The decision was made 30 October to call the talks off, and Deutsche Telekom would be informed the following day, the report said.

Sprint's stock slumped 9.3 percent Monday.

A deal between Overland Park, Kansas-based Sprint and Bellevue, Washington-based T-Mobile would be certain to attract heavy scrutiny from regulators, since it would reduce the four largest carriers in the country to three.

The companies had been hoping their chances would improve under the more business-friendly administration of US President Donald Trump. Others think he wants to invest ever more in Sprint, the better to realize his dream of connecting devices, humans, and other machines in a single artificial intelligence.
