Astros' Gurriel Makes Racist Joke Mocking Dodgers' Yu Darvish During Game Three Of World Series

Houston Astros starting pitcher Lance Mc Cullers Jr. looks on during a practice for a World Series baseball game Thursday Oct. 26 2017 in Houston Texas. Mc Cullers will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 3 Friday

Note: After this story was published, Major League Baseball announced that Yuli Gurriel would serve a 5-game suspension in 2018 for his actions last night. After hitting a home run off of Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Yu Darvish, who is part Japanese, Gurriel returned to the dugout and used his fingers to pull back the corners of his eyes and mouthed "chinito", a typically derogatory Spanish term for Asians which means "little Chinese boy".

Gurriel will not appeal the suspension.

Darvish, who is of Japanese and Iranian descent, was also confronted about the gesture, telling the media it was "disrespectful".

"The two (games ban) that is the standard that had evolved over two or three situations was inadequate", Manfred said.

Manfred declined "to characterize the conversations with the union, beyond the notion that the union was supportive of the general proposition that this type of behavior was not appropriate in our game". If the Major League Baseball imposes no punishment on Gurriel for them, the implicit message will be that they are.

He made similar comments to ESPN, adding that he has "a lot of respect" for Japanese people and "never had anything against" Darvish.

"I didn't want to offend anybody".

Gurriel will not miss any World Series games. I never had any luck against him.

She wasn't charged, but in the video depicting her arrest , she appears visibly shaken, screaming for help. Body camera footage of Payne taking nurse Alexandra Wubbels into custody made headlines.

"I feel like, of course, Houston has Asian fans and Japanese fans, and Asian fans live all over the place", Darvish said. He said, "I didn't mean to offend anybody in Japan".

"Yuli has always demonstrated respectful behaviour and is extremely remorseful for his actions".

Major League Baseball is reportedly looking to review the incident, multiple outlets reported.

Gurriel, a 33-year-old from Cuba, made the gesture shortly after homering to start Houston's four-run second inning.

Darvish said he was not angry with Gurriel.

Instead, he will be suspended the first five games of next season. He had no intention of offending anyone, but he recognises the perceived offensiveness of his actions.

Houston general manager Jeff Luhnow said in a written statement that Gurriel's forfeited salary will be donated "to the Astros Foundation and to a charity directly supporting diversity efforts". "But I was in Japan and I know they are offended by that".

His Astros have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven series against the Dodgers.
