Tejas train food lands 25 passengers in hospital

Twenty four passengers travelling on Tejas Express from Karmali to Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus have fallen ill after they had food from the pantry vehicle. The train was slated to reach Mumbai at 7.45 pm. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which manages the on-board catering services, has suspended its Madgaon area officer and the on-board manager pending a fact-finding and food-test report.

Director Catering services is proceeding to Mumbai to follow up the matter. All 26 passengers admitted in Life Care hospital. The train, that was travelling to Mumbai from Goa had to be halted when passengers started feeling uneasy after having breakfast.

The Tejas Express, one of the premium trains of the Indian Railways, connects Mumbai and Karmali in Goa. An official in IRCTC said: "A showcause notice has been served to the catering contractor and strict action is contemplated if found guilty".

A group of seven passengers complained of nausea and were attended to by onboard supervisor.

Ambulances were requisitioned and they were admitted to a local hospital and are under observation, IRCTC stated.

The IRCTC said all the passengers now hospitalised were out of danger and the same has been confirmed by hospital authorities.

"The passengers admitted to hospital are out of danger", the IRCTC official added. Food samples, including the soup sachets, were taken for testing.

Numerous passengers complained of vomiting and energy loss. The official said, "We still do not know whether food poisoning was from veg or non-vegetarian food".

Equipped with CCTV cameras besides smoke and fire detection system, the 19-coach Tejas train has bio- vacuum toilets and GPS-based passenger information display system.
