Hurricane Ophelia 2017 path to hit Ireland and UK

Weather warnings have been issued for this weekend, sparking fears Storm Brian will batter the United Kingdom with 70mph gales and severe rainfall.

A Yellow Weather Warning has been issued for the entire south east for the whole of Saturday.

It warned some coastal areas in the United Kingdom could be affected by large waves, with the potential for flooding.

A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued across the region, valid from 3pm to midnight.

Some transport disruption is likely, and short term loss of power and other services is also possible.

The storm is forming over the Atlantic on Thursday and will arrive on the west coast of Ireland on Friday night as the nation recovers from the affects of Hurricane Ophelia. At the moment, we don't expect the same level of impacts for the UK.

Under storm naming guidelines, the Met Office and its partner agency Met √Čireann name any storm with an amber - or orange - wind warning.

Met Office spokesman Grahame Madge said: 'Dramatic waves could pose a threat to life and there will be quite hazardous conditions along the seafront'.

The Met Office added that an explosive cyclogenesis, or weather bomb, was forecast to take place which is caused when pressure drops by 24 millibars in 24 hours.

Following the destruction and devastation that ex-hurricane Ophelia caused to parts of Ireland and the United Kingdom, another storm is approaching in the coming days.

Storms are named alphabetically in the United Kingdom and Ireland and Storm Brian will follow September's Storm Aileen. "These are expected to coincide with high tides, leading to locally risky conditions in coastal parts".

Northern Ireland is bracing itself for the arrival of Storm Brian on Saturday.

The devastation from Ophelia left 360,000 people without power which was a result of trees falling onto power lines.
