Watford went on to grab an injury-time victor too, as Tom Cleverley popped up in the right place to slam home a loose ball and hand Arsenal their first defeat in eight games.

'After that, the decision on the penalty we can have no impact on that at all.

"I would say it was not a penalty".

"It is a scandalous decision. No penalty, no goal".

Meanwhile Watford are on inspired form under boss Marco Silva, with 3 wins and 3 draws from their opening 7 games.

"I have seen the penalty now and I respect the decision of the referee", he said. "All the greatest players in the world attract fouls".

Arsenal's first away goal of the season was also Per Mertesacker's first in the league since December 2013.

Hector Bellerin sent a left-footed effort wide moments later from a decent position, and substitute Mesut Ozil was an even bigger culprit in the second 45 minutes as his one-on-one chance saw his casual finish easily saved by Heurelho Gomes.

Moments later came the penalty drama, and then in injury time when Andre Carrillo's shot was blocked Cleverley lashed in a dramatic victor.

"We played very well in the first half but I'm not so happy with the second". And after the 1-1 there was no need to panic.

'I don't know whether there is a future for him now in this Arsenal team and I know it looks like I'm coming for him all the time but he really should have finished the game off.

Arsenal were attempting to climb into the top four but instead it is the Hornets who find themselves in the Champions League spots. "We didn't go back again, we carried on looking for more from the game", said Silva who guided Olympiakos to the Greek title before moving to England.

Arsenal have been handed a triple injury boost ahead of Saturday's Premier League clash against Watford at Vicarage Road. "It's too early to change".
